Italy joined the war as one of the Axis Powers in 1940, with a plan to concentrate Italian forces on a major offensive against the British Empire in Africa and the Middle East. British troops moved along the coast and on 22nd January, 1941, they captured the port of Tobruk in Libya from the Italians. Your great, grandfather was caught by the British and kept as a prisoner of war in Tobruk, Libya until the war ended. He survived to eventually see his family immigrate to Canada.
